MEETING MINUTES

Tuesday, September 18, 2007 @ 5:30 p.m.

Leslie Ann Willis called the meeting to order at 5:32 p.m.

 

Members Present:  Tony D’Amico, Leslie Ann Willis, Carlotta Dixon, Ryan McCann, Ian Lee, Jessie Duan, Wesley Lo, Taler Echols, Madhu Vulimiri, Tiffany Tutwiler, Sid Vadakkeveedu, Alyssa Egel

 

Members Absent: Tom Hemrick, Ben Mohar

 

Staff Present:  Cindi King

 

Guests: Marla Dorrel; NCSU students Matthew Sprouse, Elke Weil, and George Joseph

 

 

Adoption of the Agenda

Ian Lee made a motion to adopt the September agenda, Tony D’Amico seconded. The motion carried by a unanimous vote.

 

Adoption of Minutes

Wesley Lo made a motion to adopt the August minutes, Ian Lee seconded. The motion carried by a unanimous vote.

New Business

 

Cindi gave the committee information on upcoming public meetings regarding the aquatics center and the old Cary Elementary renovation plan.  Teens were encouraged to attend the meetings and give input.

 

Old Business

 

Teen Forum Discussion
The date for the 2008 Teen Forum has been set for March 15th.

 

Committee members were divided into the following Forum work groups.

Sponsorship/Door prizes: Madhu, Jessie, Wesley, Taler
The cost of the Forum has been included in the Teen Scene budget for this year.  The sponsorship work group will still contact past sponsor Crossroads Ford to potentially sponsor the keynote speaker for 2008.  The sponsorship work group will concentrate more on getting door prizes. 

 

Marketing: Alyssa, Ryan, Tiffany, Tony, Carlotta
Suggestions for potential marketing contacts include The Cary News and Cary Magazine. Radio stations were also suggested and the work group was asked to come up with a list radio stations to contact. 

 

 

 

 

Logistics: Ian, Sidhu, Ben, Leslie Ann
The committee decided to stay w/ the format of last year’s Forum.

Theme

The committee surveyed area school groups and youth organizations and based on their responses decided on an Environmental theme for the 2008 Forum and the tag line “What in the world is going on”. 

 

The committee discussed options for session topics and came up with the following options and contacts.

 

Effects of Global Warming
Water/drought issues (NC Conservation Network)

Calculating your ecological footprint

Energy Conservation (NC Solar Center)

Building an owl house (Earthshares)

Tree plantings (NC Forestry Service)

Making bags out of organic fabric

Organic food tasting (Whole Foods)

Making paper

Alternative fuels and alternative fuel vehicles

Air awareness
