A.         Call to Order – Denny Hoadley, Chair

·         The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m.

 

B.         Roll Call

·         Absent:  Deanna Kerrigan; Michael McDade

·         Report from chair

Ř       Committee Member Application due January 30, 2007.

Ř       Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Advisory Board discussed Goals/Work Plan; Priority Guidelines; and 2008 Fiscal Planning.

 

C.        Adoption of Agenda
Denny Hoadley requested that under New Business add Review of Holiday Tree Lighting and Community Tree Project.
ACTION:  David Lindquist made a motion to accept the agenda with the addition.  Kay Struffolino seconded.  The motion passed unanimously.

 

D.         Adoption of Minutes

·         November 4, 2006

ACTION:  Kay Struffolino made a motion to accept the November 4, 2006 minutes.  Gyan Gupta seconded.  The motion passed unanimously.

 

E.         Staff Report

·         Sara Maultsby, Center Supervisor of Page-Walker

v      Discussed the Cary-osity video.

v      The producer and co-director is Cynthia Baker an 8th grade social studies teacher at Davis Drive Middle School.

v      Cary-osity was produced with grants and gifts from the North Carolina Civic Education Consortium, Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, Friends of Page Walker, the Lazy Daze Committee, Wake County Public School System and the Town of Cary.

 

F.         New Business

·         Community Outreach for Ticket Subsidy

v      The community outreach idea came from Sarah Bunch who was approach by a group of senior citizens who wanted to attend one of the Marvelous Music concerts, but could only afford to $5.00 per ticket.

v      This committee played an integral part and paid the other portion of the ticket price.

v      At this time there is not a plan on how to handle these situations.  Is this something the committee would like to look into?

v      The committee wanted to know how often this occurs.  Staff explained there are not many requests.

v      Paul Wasylkevych and Denny Hoadley will look into this and see if there is an easy solution.  At this time staff will continue to handle on a case by case basis.

 

·         Old Cary Elementary Presentation Report

v      Staff updated the committee on the progress of Old Cary Elementary.

v      This committee will have an integral part in this process.

v      There will be three meetings with the group over a year to discuss the plans.

v      This process should begin in April.

 

·         Goals Discussion

v      The goals need to be narrowed down to 2-3 items.

v      Continue to gather citizen feedback information.

v      Work with consultant on Old Cary Elementary project.

v      Support Festivals Committee with Spring Daze and Lazy Daze Arts and Crafts Festival.

v      Support Koka Booth Amphitheatre Advisory Board with the Cultural Arts table for events; as well as volunteers for Tinsel Town.

ACTION:  Kay Struffolino made a motion to accept the above goals.  Philip Shepard seconded.  The motion passed unanimously.

 

·         Cultural Non-Profit Funding Process

v      Review criteria for funding of the non-profit organizations.

v      Applications are being distributed now.

v      Staff will send the criteria information out before the February meeting.

 

·         Volunteer Awards and Banquet

v      Nominations are being accepted now for nine Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources awards.

v      The deadline is January 19, 2007.

v      The banquet will be on February 27, 2007.

 

·         Committee Review of the Holiday Tree Lighting and Community Tree Project

v      The committee was in agreement that the sound system for the event did not work well.

v      It was unfortunate that the public did not get to hear the wonderful presentation.

v      The Community Tree Project went well, as did the events at Page-Walker and Herb Young Community Center.

 

G.         Updates and Discussions

·         Festival Committee Report 11/21/06 and 12/19/06– Kay Struffolino

v      The Sister Cities Commission will bring a proposal to the Festival Committee for a beer garden.

v      The festival consultant’s report indicated that this would be a large revenue opportunity.

v      If the committee has any comments, please direct them to Kay and she will take them before the Festival Committee.

v      The next Festival Committee meeting is Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at Cindi’s House Café on Chatham Street.

v      The Lazy Daze Grants Reception will be on Thursday, January 25, 2007 at the Page-Walker Arts and History Center.

 

·         Amphitheatre Advisory Committee Report 10/16/06 & 11/13/06– Kay Struffolino

v      Tinsel Town was a success.  Thanks to the volunteers who came out to support the event.

v      Staff is currently working on the 2007 line-up for the Amphitheatre.
