ATTENDANCE:

Committee Members: Denny Hoadley, Chair; Mamta Bisarya; Gyan Gupta; Deanna Kerrigan; Gary Lew; David Lindquist; Michael McDade; Philip Shepard; Kay Struffolino; Ginny Trautman; Andrew Shears – Teen Council Representative;

 

Absent: Bob Myers

A.         Call to Order:

Denny Hoadley called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm.

§         The recommendations made by this committee on funding for the cultural arts organizations will go through the Town Manager’s Office, before going to Council.

§         Reminder of the Joint PRCR Advisory Board and Committees meeting scheduled for Monday, May 1, 2006 at the Page-Walker Arts and History Center.

 

B.        Minutes:

Kay Struffolino made a motion to approve the minutes of March 14, 2006.  David Lindquist seconded.  The motion passed unanimously.

§         Minutes are posted on the Town’s website and hard copies will be distributed at the meetings.

 

C.        Committee Welcome and Introductions

Denny Hoadley welcomed the new members and asked everyone to give brief introductions.  The new committee members are as follows:

            Deanna Kerrigan                                    Michael McDade

            Gary Lew                                              Philip Shephard

            David Lindquist

           

D.        Staff Report:

Lyman Collins, Cultural Arts Manager

Lyman Collins explained this committee is part of the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Advisory Board and provides guidance and feedback to staff and Town Council on various aspects of the arts and cultural programs/facilities.  Lyman distributed a handout listing a wide variety of programs, events and activities the Cultural Arts Division coordinates and asked committee members to check any of the activities that they had participated in the past 2 years.  In addition a second handout was provided for committee members to plan for activities they hope to attend in the future.  The list will be compiled and discussed at the May meeting.

 

E.         Updates and Discussions

            Festivals Committee Report – Kay Struffolino

Committee Volunteers at the Festivals

§         The Festivals Committee finalized the steps for this committee to take the role of coordinating the Cultural Arts tent and other civic groups for Spring Daze and Lazy Daze.

§         Mamta Bisarya has agreed to coordinate the tent for Spring Daze.

§         The committee members will need to sign up to work a 2 hour shift to help man the booth.

 

Meeting of 3/21/06

§         The new layout of Spring Daze will not reduce the number of artist as originally thought.  There will be approximately 140 artists, which is the same as last year.

§         A panel has been selected to jury the artwork.

§         The Spring Daze poster was presented in draft the final poster was ready by the end of the week.

§         The committee is working to develop a new Mission Statement.

 

Meeting of 4/11/06

§         Jerry Miller, is doing the artwork for the 30th anniversary of Lazy Daze, has sent 2 paintings which were shown to the committee this morning.  One is from the early days showing the downtown area, the other is from last year showing all the tents of the artists and streets full of people.

§         A draft Mission Statement was edited and a final draft will be forthcoming at the May meeting.

§         Spring Daze brochures and posters are currently being distributed throughout the Town.

§         Volunteers are still needed, contact Joy Cox, joy.cox@townofcary.org as soon as possible.

 

Amphitheatre Advisory Committee Report – Gyan Gupta

§         Schedule for the summer is available and accessible at www.boothamphitheatre.com

§         Several new concerts will be added to the schedule in the coming weeks.

§         Would like everyone to signup for the e-newsletter, that will give you up-to-date information

§         In advisory committee meeting last month members discussed upcoming events, volunteers and volunteer training.  New committee members were trained.

 

Update on Town Center Civic and Cultural Arts District Study – Lyman Collins

§         Streetscape Plan and Public Meeting – April 26, 2006 at Old Cary Elementary School from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. (drop-in).

§         Share your comments at the Town of Cary’s workshop on the future downtown Cary streescapes.

§         Your input at this meeting is key, as it will help guide final revisions to the DRAFT Plan.

§         Participants will be able to view the draft and share thoughts, opinions and suggestions.

 

Marvelous Music Series Update – Sarah Bunch

§         Concluded the 2005-2006 Season

§         Committee Members that attended any of the show are encouraged to email Sarah at sarah.bunch@townofcary.org with feedback.

§         The 2006-2007 Season has been scheduled with the following acts:

1.            Hunt Family Fiddlers, Saturday, November 4, 2006 at 7:30 p.m.

2.            Marcus Belgrave’s Tribute to Louis Armstrong, Friday, January 12, 2007 at 7:30 p.m.

3.            Dukes of Dixieland, Friday, February 23, 2007 at 7:30 p.m.

4.            Time for Three, Friday, May 4, 2007 at 7:30 pm.

§         Currently the spring and summer Sertoma Concert Series are being held at Bond Park.
