D.         Updates and Discussions

·         Festival Committee Report – Kay Struffolino

Ø       The Festival Committee has adopted a mission statement and goals for the Lazy Daze Arts and Crafts Festival and the Spring Daze Arts and Crafts Festival.

Ø       The Committee has received preliminary approval for a United Arts Grant.  If approved the Committee will use the money for the Lazy Daze 30th anniversary in “06 as well as Spring Daze ’07.

Ø       A Spring Daze “06 debriefing concluded this was the best festival to date.  It was decided to add a “Breakfast Brigade” component to the festival to serve the artists and workers and will function between the hours of 6:00 am – 9:00 am.  Also, additional signage will be necessary to designate shuttle use at the handicapped parking areas.  The Committee requested that parking/shuttle signage at the parking deck downtown and at Bond Park be posted the day before the festival to alert drivers to the service.

·         Committee Report Spring Daze Planning – David Lindquist

David reported he, Deanna Kerrigan and Kay Struffolino meet to review and make recommendations on the Cultural Arts area for Spring Daze and Lazy Daze.  Please follow this link to the Proposal for the Cultural Arts Zone.

Problems:

Ø       Cultural Arts Zone (CAZ) in “05 and “06 did not invite equitable traffic for participants.

Ø       Not all groups participated and uneven portrayal of what arts groups do.

Ø       Participation took on a competitive quality (for traffic, attention, etc.)

Ø       Much of the coordination role fell to festival staff.

Objectives:

Ø       Good balance of traffic potential for participants and represent more groups.

Ø       Emphasis on the cultural arts “team”.

Ø       Stay within limited footprint at site.

Ø       Make entire zone more inviting to public.

Ø

·         Lazy Daze Planning

David explained that we need to start contacting the groups in regards to Lazy Daze “06.  He will email the Committee with a list of groups and who to contact.

·         Amphitheatre Advisory Committee Report – Kay Struffolino

Ø       Those who volunteered for the first 3 performances of the new season discussed the events and any issues that presented themselves.

Ø       As volunteer coordinator, I am trying a new procedure where committee members only commit to helping with shows for the following month’s schedule.

Ø       The June 19th Air Force Jazz performance will also be Neighbor Day.  Both the residential and business ‘neighbors’ receive passes that entitle them to free admission at pre-selected events held at the venue.

Ø       Friday, June 9th is the annual Play with the Pros concert as well as the dedication ceremony for the Koka Booth Bust.  The dedication will take place at 6:30 pm and the concert will begin at 7:30 pm.  This is a NC Symphony performance where qualified musicians from the community are invited to play along-side the orchestra musicians for several pieces on the program.

There are two upcoming meetings that committee members may want to attend.

Ø       Picture Downtown – June 15, 2006 at the Herb Young Community Center from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm.  There will be plans of what downtown Cary could look like with the streetscapes plan.
