Cary, NC – The Town of Cary will permanently close the at-grade railroad crossing at Carpenter Fire Station Road, east of N.C. 55, on July 11 per an agreement with CSX Transportation and the N.C. Department of Transportation. Drivers will still be able to access the Morrisville Carpenter Road at-grade crossing to the south. This closure is part of the Town’s Carpenter Fire Station Road Bridge and Intersection Improvements Project and in support of a private development to extend O’Kelly Chapel Road north to Research Triangle Park.
In conjunction, a private developer will extend O’Kelly Chapel Road from N.C. 55 to Little Drive, which requires a new at-grade crossing. Construction of the O’Kelly Chapel Road extension, which is laid out in the Imagine Cary Community Plan, began fall 2017 and is expected to open to traffic late summer 2018.
While the at-grade crossing closure at Carpenter Fire Station Road is permanent, the Town plans to open the route again via a new roadway under the railroad line as part of a larger realignment project. The Town plans to realign Carpenter Fire Station Road from N.C. 55 to Morrisville Carpenter Road, west of Louis Stephens Drive, creating a four-lane, median-divided street. The project will provide additional capacity and increased safety for drivers. Construction is expected to begin fall 2018 and be complete by summer 2022. Once the realigned section of Carpenter Fire Station Road is open to traffic, the Town will permanently close the at-grade railroad crossing of Morrisville Carpenter Road to the south as part of the agreement with NCDOT and CSX Transportation.
The estimated cost for the Carpenter Fire Station Road Bridge and Intersection Improvements Project is $30 million. Funding was approved by Cary voters as part of the 2012 Community Investment Bonds referendum. The private developer is responsible for all costs associated with the O’Kelly Chapel Road at-grade railroad crossing, as well as the Carpenter Fire Station Road and Morrisville Carpenter Road at-grade railroad crossing closures.
