CARY, NC –The Town of Cary is proud to announce the completion of work to improve pedestrian and vehicle safety on Walnut Street from Lawrence Road and Nottingham Drive to Piney Plains Road, and on Buck Jones Road from Walnut Street to the Best Motor Imports business. Improvements include new sidewalks, bridge and roadway widening, landscaping, streetlights, pavement markings, pedestrian signals and traffic signal improvements along Walnut Street from Lawrence Road to Piney Plains Road and Buck Jones Road at Walnut Street.  A third northbound lane was added at Walnut Street from Meeting Street to Buck Jones Road and an additional right turn lane added on the US 1 northbound and US 64 eastbound off ramp has helped alleviate congestion while improving pedestrian safety.

“It’s exciting to see the work accomplished given its impact on the safety of those who live in and visit our Town. Our thanks go out not only to the businesses in the corridor and those who live, work and travel along Walnut Street for their patience throughout this transformation, but to everyone in Cary who voted in favor of the 2012 Cary Community Bonds, which made these improvements possible,” said Bob Shultes, Project Engineer.

The estimated total project cost is $5.5 million, which included design, right-of-way acquisition, engineering, inspections and construction. This project was funded through the Transportation Bonds Referendum that was approved by nearly 70 percent of Cary citizens who voted on November 6, 2012.
