Mission, Purpose, Program
The overall mission of the Water Treatment Plant is to cost-effectively produce water that meets or exceeds all regulatory requirements for the protection of our water consumers. In doing so, provide a safe, team-oriented work environment in which quality workmanship, cooperation, high professional standards, and continuous improvement are emphasized and consistently maintained.
The Water Treatment Plant Division consists of one water treatment facility, the Cary/Apex Water Treatment Plant, rated at a maximum capacity of 16 million gallons per day. The division is also responsible for the operation and maintenance of both the Jordan Lake raw water intake facility and the Apex flow diversion vault, which directs and meters water to the Town of Apex.
The Cary/Apex Water Treatment Plant has achieved compliance with all regulatory requirements since start-up. Additionally, staff has been challenged to produce water that is free of all taste and odor.
A superintendent, charged with the overall day to day responsibility for the operation of the facility, heads the Cary/Apex Water Treatment Plant. In addition, the plant's three staffing sections, laboratory, maintenance, and operations, are each headed by a working supervisor or team leader. In FY 1996, it was determined that specific personnel needs required increased staffing of the maintenance division, and a utility maintenance worker was hired.
Due to continuing shortages of personnel in both the operations and the maintenance divisions, which resulted in high overtime costs for both of these divisions in FY 1996, a operations/maintenance specialist was approved and subsequently hired during FY 1997. An ongoing needs assessment will continue to monitor temporary staffing positions, currently consisting of a laboratory intern, and determine if additions to the permanent WTP staff should be requested in the future.
