Mission, Purpose, Program

The mission of the North Cary Water Reclamation Plant (NCWRF) is to treat wastewater from the community to a level that meets or exceeds the permit limits issued by regulatory authorities as cost effectively as possible. In doing so, the plant will provide a safe, team-oriented environment in which quality workmanship, cooperation, high professional standards, and continuous improvement are emphasized and maintained.

The NCWRF is a 10 million gallons per day (MGD) facility that receives wastewater from collection systems on the north side of Cary. The wastewater is introduced to various treatment processes that effectively treat to levels that consistently meet permit limits. After treatment and disinfection, the final product is discharged into Crabtree Creek, a tributary of the Neuse River, in a manner that protects the receiving streams from pollutants and contamination.

The plant is designed to remove BOD, TSS, total nitrogen, and phosphorus from its discharge. As a result of treating wastewater, a solid product (biosolids) is produced and a means for recycling is needed. Liquid land application is the choice method of disposal and is accomplished by contract operators. All required tests for sludge regulations (503 federal regulations) are performed by staff at the North Plant Laboratory.

To protect the Town’s investment, an extensive preventive maintenance program is essential to the proper operation of the facility. Daily, weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly schedules of maintenance assure us that the equipment and processes are well maintained.

The NCWRF’s staff is comprised of fifteen employees. Currently, staffing consists of a superintendent, twelve positions for maintenance and operations, two laboratory staff, and a secretary. In addition, the industrial pretreatment section laboratory work is performed at the NCWRF. Operators provide around the clock surveillance and expertise in process control.

Operations/Maintenance Specialists are cross-trained and can be used to relieve operators during vacancies or staffing shortages. Mechanics provide preventive and corrective maintenance to the main process plant, one regional pump station and biosolids facilities. Laboratory staff support operations through daily analysis and testing of wastewater processes. Laboratory staff also offers support to other divisions in the Town of Cary.
