Smoke Testing
The Town's Public Works and Utilities Department tests for leaks in the sewer system by forcing non-toxic smoke into the lines. Testing occurs in different parts of Cary each year.
2009 Testing
When: Starting Sunday, August 9, 2009 (depending on weather) and continuing for approximately nine to ten weeks. (Testing in an individual neighborhood may take only a few minutes.)
Where: Testing will take place northeast of Walnut Street to Buck Jones Road and North to East Chatham Street and the Cary Towne Mall. See map.
Why: To find where storm water and other surface waters are entering Town sewers and to reveal sources of sewer odors
More Details: See a letter to property owners explaining the testing. See a 24-hour notice left on doors of homes and businesses the day before testing is scheduled in an area.
The smoke manufacturer also provides detailed information.
